Jonathan Wiggins, Senior Pastor at Resurrection Fellowship, clearly identifies himself as a Christian Zionist in an interview with the Longmont Reporter-Herald. As such, he cannot possibly treat the Palestinian people as anything but vassals and slaves to the state of Israel, to be murdered or imprisoned at will. This is the exact reason We Hold These Truths, Coloradans for Justice in Palestine and Project Strait Gate are protesting the “Israel Summit – Stand Firm” conference hosted by Resurrection Fellowship.
Wiggins states, “We have people from Brazil, India, people all over to kind of articulate this vision of unity.” Sounds nice, but then Wiggins goes on to say:
“One of our main thrusts is to get people back to the Bible and what it says; God’s relationship with the Jewish people. We believe it’s clearly taught that God has an eternal covenant with Jewish people and it doesn’t depend on Israel’s righteousness or goodness, it is based upon God’s goodness and righteousness and sovereign choosing of his people.” … “We believe God loves and there is a prophetic picture that the restoration of Israel would happen… We’re looking to affirm some of the faith positions of scripture.”
Wiggins all but admits he believes that those who are following Jesus need to recognize and treat political Israel with God-like status. No wonder he looks the other way when Israel commits unspeakable crimes against Palestinian neighbors, because he clearly thinks and teaches that God gave Israel the land, thus Palestinians can have no God-given rights. We believe that they do.
What does Jesus say about Israelite racial superiority and land claims from God? Jesus called the Israelites’ corrupted religious leaders “Sons of Satin,” among other similar terms. And, when faced with similar claims of their superiority, the Apostle Paul may have best explained the relationship of Israelites to gentiles in the third chapter of his letter to the Galatians:
1Oh, foolish Galatians! What magician has hypnotized you and cast an evil spell upon you? For you used to see the meaning of Jesus Christ’s death as clearly as though I had waved a placard before you with a picture on it of Christ dying on the cross…24 Let me put it another way. The Jewish laws were our teacher and guide until Christ came to give us right standing with God through our faith. 25 But now that Christ has come, we don’t need those laws any longer to guard us and lead us to him. 26 For now we are all children of God through faith in Jesus Christ, 27 and we who have been baptized into union with Christ are enveloped by him. 28 We are no longer Jews or Greeks or slaves or free men or even merely men or women, but we are all the same—we are Christians; we are one in Christ Jesus. 29 And now that we are Christ’s we are the true descendants of Abraham, and all of God’s promises to him belong to us. [Living Word Bible]
